By the time the glass doors of Buckingham Palace’s balcony swung open at 1.26pm, the playful crowds below were already chanting: ‘Kiss, kiss, kiss.’
They had to wait a few minutes, but when the time came they were doubly rewarded.
At first, though, the newlyweds stepped forward, smiling, waving, and exchanging a few words – although onlookers could never have hoped to make out what was being said so far away, above the din of the crowd.
Yet anyone watching on TV could make out the words – if only they could lip-read, that is.
Seize the moment: And Kate duly obliged as she entered into a passionate embrace with her new husband
Engage the masses: As the happy couple rode in the carriage along The Mall, William motioned to his wife to bow her head before they saluted the cheering crowd
Now, The Mail on Sunday can reveal what the Prince and his bride said to each other in that historic moment.
‘Wow, that’s amazing,’ exclaimed Kate, confronted by the spectacle below: a forest of up-raised flags, periscopes and mobile phones stretching from the gates of the Palace all the way along The Mall to Admiralty Arch in the distance.
After a minute, the couple were joined by their bridesmaids and pageboys and then their families.
Carole Middleton couldn’t resist a coy wave, while her husband Michael shared his observations with Prince Charles.
On the other side of the balcony, Pippa Middleton appeared charmed by the Duke of Edinburgh; Prince Harry, standing with Kate’s younger brother James, delivered a quip or two; and the Queen, her hands clasped behind her back, simply kept smiling.
A veteran of the balcony appearance, she had seen this before, but seemed genuinely moved nonetheless.
Proud moment: During the marriage ceremony, Prince William told his wife that she looked 'beautiful'
Job well done: The Queen was suitably impressed with the service telling her husband Prince Philip that she thought it was 'excellent'
There was some small talk about the weather, how the rain had held, how delightful it was that there was sunshine against the odds.
And then Prince William, half-turning to his bride, said: ‘Go on, a little kiss, go on.’
A little kiss was exactly what he got. In fact it was scarcely more than a peck and brought to mind Prince Charles’s rather stilted kiss with Princess Diana on the same spot 30 years earlier.
But high on an enormous blast of goodwill, William, normally averse to public displays of affection, wanted more – and so, of course, did the multitude before him.
‘Let’s give them another one. I love you,’ said William, as a spectacular flypast of Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft swept into view. ‘One more kiss, one more kiss. OK?’
Support: Maid of honour Pippa Middleton, who did a sterling job carrying the train, told her sister Kate she looked 'amazing'
Kate acquiesced and gave him a smacker that detonated a tidal wave of cheering, prompting William to echo the crowds, and say with them: ‘Come on! Come on! More! More! More!’
It was all too much for three-year-old bridesmaid Grace van Cutsem – the noise of the crowd and the flypast, that is, not the kissing – and she covered her ears and looked cross.
It made for a charming image that will no doubt be enjoyed by her family in years to come. Behind her, Prince Charles lifted Camilla’s granddaughter Eliza Lopes, also three and a fellow bridesmaid, high into the air to get a better view.
At 1.31pm the Queen began to wander back inside and the others followed. Kate lingered a moment more, then with a backwards look over her left shoulder, savoured the extraordinary scenes for a final time.
Happy bunch: The crowd were more than happy as they got to see not one, but two kisses on the Buckingham Palace balcony
Camilla: ‘It all looks very posh’ -- and the other Abbey asides

They are words of reassurance familiar to nervous brides and their fathers the world over. As they travelled to Westminster Abbey, Michael Middleton turned to his daughter and said: ‘You look beautiful. It will all be amazing. . . You’ll be fine. I’m proud of you.’
Though she didn’t show it, Kate had reason to be apprehensive. From the moment she stepped out of the Goring Hotel and into a Rolls-Royce Phantom VI, she was aware that the world would scrutinise her every move.
As they began their nine-minute journey across London, the cameras homed in on famous faces inside the Abbey – and their comments were easily picked up by anyone who could lip-read.
David Beckham was seen pausing to chat as he made his way to his seat. Catching up with his wife Victoria, who looked annoyed, he said: ‘Oh, he was just saying that. . .’ But she cut him short: ‘I can’t really talk about that now.’
Many guests commented on the crowds. ‘The crowds! Amazing! Look!’ exclaimed Autumn Phillips, the wife of Princess Anne’s son Peter.
Prince William arrived at the Abbey with his best man Prince Harry. At one point, as Harry hung back chatting, his brother ordered: ‘Come on inside.’
Greeted by the Dean of Westminster, Dr John Hall, William instantly offered compliments. ‘The place looks beautiful,’ he said. As they walked through the congregation, William spotted his mother’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes. ‘Thanks for coming,’ he said.
Like her daughter, Carole Middleton also needed reassurance. On her arrival, one of the officiating bishops told her: ‘Everything is fine, everyone is fine and all will be fine.’
Smiling she replied: ‘Oh, thanks.’
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were the next to arrive. As they entered, Charles asked: ‘Are you OK?’ and Camilla replied: ‘I’m fine.’
And then she looked around her and said: ‘It all looks very posh.’
Not now! Victoria Beckham rebuked David
The Queen, meanwhile, thought it looked ‘lovely’, adding that she was looking forward to the service.
At 11am Kate revealed her much-anticipated dress to the watching world as she stepped on to the red carpet outside the Abbey’s Great West Door. Her sister Pippa said: ‘You look wonderful’ while Kate responded to other comments about her dress by saying: ‘People have been working on it for days.’
Holding her father’s arm, she began the three-minute walk down the aisle. Harry is seen looking over his shoulder while standing with his brother at the altar. Playfully, he paused long enough to make William nervous and then said, laughing: ‘Well, she looks beautiful, I can tell you that.’
As Kate took her place at the altar, William turned and said: ‘You look, er, you are beautiful’. He then mumbled something beginning ‘Don’t forget. . .’ which produced a smile from Kate.
Lip-readers were also able to pick up some of what the newlyweds said as they travelled to Buckingham Palace in the 1902 State Landau. At one point, Kate asked: ‘Well, are you happy?’
William replied: ‘Yes! Yes! It was a beautiful service. It really was. . . It was amazing. I’m so proud you’re my wife.’
When they reached the huge crowds on The Mall, Kate said: ‘It’s amazing!’
‘Yes! It’s great!’ said William. And finally, at the Palace, Kate turned to her husband as they stepped out of the carriage, and said: ‘Watch out for the train.’
